The Digipak!

Finally, after weeks of trying and failing to upload our digipak, here it is! We are still unsure as to why we had so many problems with it but at least we have managed to get it up now. Using the photographs we previously took of Peter, we came up with some design ideas we liked in relation to Pete's character and the research we did on digipaks, as well as our original artist research like Jamie T etc. Then, Alex edited them on Photoshop and added effects that are also consistant to our music video such as colour variations and lighting diffrences. The backrounds consist of very simple city related images but we feel it works well and looks very effective. Enjoy :)

Video Evaluation!!

We also have made a video evalution as a group but are currently waiting for it to be uploaded onto youtube so we can link it to our blog :)

Evaluation - Juanita's Ill :(

As I have a sore throat I didn't really say much on the video of our evaluation, however, I feel that our ancillary texts and our main product go hand-in-hand. They represent a 'typical' London lad quite effectively and this can relate to the main target audience of younger people as well as many digital natives through the use of different social networking sites; Facebook, Twitter, Myspace.
Also, we feel that our video challenges stereotypical videos that are of our genre or same topic, love, with all the post production work on Live Type and the fact that it is narrative based, rather than conforming to them. This too tends to appeal to people of a young age who are branded as being more rebellious throughout their youth.

Myspace is rubbish!!

Emily is currently trying to create a Myspace page for our Band but its proving to be harder than expected!!
The computers at school don't seem to want to work properly so Emily is going to try and finish customising it at home, along with making a Youtube account, Twitter and maybe a blog site!
We will also need to upload videos and pictures. Then we need to write up about gig dates and releasing the new album ect ect..
Alex, Amy, Juanita are trying to edit the video whilst Emily is doing the Myspace. But have also found that slightly harder than planned.
We may also need to reshot the singing parts of the video, but are not too sure until we watch our video through. However, we do need to film a few shots that we have missed out.

Stop Motion

Wohooohooo!! Its finally here :) our stop motion practise:

Just like the fast and slow sequences, we have lost the quality of the video due to the upload from iMovie to Youtube.
We did this experiment to see how we could include stop motion in our music video. Becuase we wanted to have our main guy walking on what seemed like an endless journey, we had to find a way to make him walking much more intresting... this was the best way to do so.

Fast Slow Sequence

After excruciating weeks (what seemed like months) of pain suffered whilst trying to upload our videos onto Youtube, Juanita has finally managed to upload the fast and slow preliminary work.
Unfortunately, the upload on to Youtube has meant we have lost the quality of the video due tothe move from iMovie.

We had originally wanted to use similar effects to the ones in our sequences and also wanted to experiment with different lenses. However, we felt that the different camera lenses wouldn't really fit into our video, so we decided against it. Where we had filmed Amy in blue in our final music video we made the rapping part of the song in black and white to seperate it from the rest of the video. This was good for two reasons:

  1. Peter was the artist and the rapper so the audience will be able to easily see a difference.
  2. As this was the only part where we had singing we felt it was all-the-more important to have this part STAND OUT from the rest of the video.

Our Evalutions

To maximise our chances of ultimate success at the end of the stress and amazingness that is OUR CREATION :D we have decided to each do our own form of an evaluation to make sure that no one is missing out and everyone has a chance to do and say what they like and want to. Up until this moment, it has been a team effort with everyone playing their part ridiculously good!
The video is done and the evaluations to come is the only thing that's stopping up from saying we are OFFICIALLY done. After the video has been uploaded as are our accompanying comments, thoughts and ideas it will be great to finally sit down and say "look what we have done, this is what we have achieved!!!!!!"
The end of the stress with the creation of something wicked. We are proud :)

Current Evaluation!

We have just finished filming and editting our group Video evaluation!! Wohooo
We're waiting to upload it on to youtube and then transfer it too our blog but as of it we haven't been able to as it keeps coming up with errors. But we're not the only ones.
Hopefully it should appear soon!

So as well as doing a group presentation we have all also made indvidual powerpoint presentations which you should find on this blog!

ENJOY!

Day 1: All together now!!

We have now officially been put into our group for Year 13's project and are now starting our blog!!

Group 13 A4 consists of:

Amy Dicks Alex Wright

Emily Brennan Juanita Shikira

Day 2: Our Song!

After listening to many song choices we narrowed our favourites down to two, 'I'm In Love' and 'Just Can't Get Enough'.

We then discussed possible ideas for a music video for each track. We decided that 'I'm In Love' would be a more realistic choice in terms of setting and casting, and our initial idea for our video was more substantial.

Therefore I'm In Love is our song choice for our A2 Media coursework. Woohoo :D
Lets just hope this was the right move for us!!

Day 3: Fast and Slow Sequences

Our first preliminary task in our groups was to film some footage for an hour and then to edit the clips to two different songs, one fast and one slow.
Amy volunteered to be in the video while Juanita, Emily and Alex worked on camera and lighting. We filmed in a dark room and chose to use lighting with filters as the main focus in our videos. We also had Amy, changing shoes and positions in the shots to make the sequences more exciting. Although the task of filming enough footage in an hour seemed daunting at first, we worked well as a group and did finish in time.
We then edited our work which was difficult as we had decided to match the edits with the beat of the music exactly. This took us a couple of days to complete but we are pleased with the end results, and we learnt the importance of story boarding and being prepared for filming.
We also know that it is really important to film as much footage as possible for our real video.

This is our Fast Slow Sequence:

Day 4: Wheels in Motion

We are now starting to make plans for the filming part of our project.

Finally we have come up with a name for our band :

Boy and the Element

Alex has started to create a Myspace.com page for the band, however, we still have not got together a band of our own to use in pictures for site and videos ect.

We now need to start story boarding and planning our shots and ideas for the music video. We also need to brainstorm locations and maybe think about audtions for the roles within the video. Hopefully we will have completed the filming part of the project by the end of october half term!!
Fingers crossed!!

Our Song!

We are creating a music video for the song I'm In Love, originally sung by Audio Bullys!!:

In our video we have used some similar aspects to the original song. For example, the idea of images and words popping up with certain words is what we had planned to do to make the video more entertaining and exaggerated.

Thursday 6 January 2011

Audio Bullys Stills

These stills have been selected because it shows a direct relationship between the lyrics and visuals. Also, they fill the background of the shot and make the mise-en-scene more attractive and fill the shot so that is no wasted space in the frame. In addition to being very efficient this also makes the video simple yet a whole lot more entertaining to watch as it engages with the audience.

Shot 1

Shot 2

Shot 3

Shot 4

As it is clear to see, each of the four shot above have three main things that are included in the frame:
- the white blank canvas for a background
- a person
- and reference to the lyrics in someway

In each shot the frame is square on, however, in each the main thing (being a person) is not in the dead centre. Shot 1 and 2 are 2-shots with a person on either the left or right and then a hanging picture that contains lyrical reference. With regards to shots 3 and 4 they have animated words that appear on the screen as they are said. With the exception of shot 3, which has the words off-centre at the top and the heart encasing the singer, shot 4 also follows the 2-shot idea.

Inspired Stills - Kylie Mingoue

Kylie Minogue

Although Kylie’s song is not in anyway directly linked to our song or genre, the video focuses on her walking in a continuous circuit around the same roads and meeting herself at the beginning of the route each time. The idea of a continuous endless journey is one that we have played with as a group. However, at the end instead of coming to a complete close we have decided to leave it open for our audience to make assumptions themselves.

Inspired Stills - B.O.B

B.O.B

These specific stills use the ideas that we have taken to make the basis of our video. For example: nighttime, London along the Thames and streets/houses.

Inspired Stills - Jamie T

Jamie T

The stills taken from 'Sheila' are similar to those that we intend to use in our video. The nighttime effect and the romantically lit trees are an end result, which we wish to achieve in the song. We feel that a beautifully lit riverside walk would fit perfectly with the lyrics of the song, not so much the genre however.

Music Video Research - Jamie T

These are some videos we feel represent or link to the video we wish to create ourselves for the song 'I'm In Love'. Some of these music videos have elements in them of which we are hoping to include in our final video.

1. Jamie T - Sheila:

When we first heard our song, our initial idea was “a guy who is on his journey home to his girlfriend/wife/fiancĂ©. We had originally planned to have our main character walking down a looooooongggggg road on his own or with his dog; however, we decided that this was ‘playing it safe’. Like ‘Sheila’ we too have resulted in using Southbank as our long path for our video. In addition to this, we came to the conclusion that the lights on the trees would make a really romantic setting, even though the ‘Main Man’ is making the journey by his self.

Music Video Research - Just Jack

2. Just Jack - The Day I Died

‘The Day I Died’ is a video that, like we want ours to be, is based on a man’s journey in a day. Although the lyrics and visuals have a direct relationship with each other in the Just Jack video ‘I’m In Love’ does not. We have decided to go against this connection and have decided to edit our song to the music instead. Also, because it does not have specific references to anything, therefore, we have plenty of room to play with when it comes to post production of our song.

Music Video Research - The Streets

3. The Streets - Fit But You Know It

We are currently in the middle of working on the practice of making a still image merge with the next moving shot. Like The Streets has photos that move slightly in some places, we are trying to do the same but instead of pictures we would like our main guy to be holding a newspaper. From here we want to achieve a shot where the camera zooms to a close up of picture on the paper and it starts to move; we want this part to be the rapping part of the song.

Music Video Research - B.O.B

4. B.O.B Ft. Bruno Mars - Nothin' On You

Both ‘Nothin' on You’ and ‘I’m In Love’ have similar aspects in the sense that both are orientated around the idea of a man who has made a journey to find the person who he loves. From this video we have decided to use the idea of our ‘Main Man’ walking down a long path/road. However, whereas B.O.B is walking down what seems to be an endless road, we have decided that our character will be making a journey. This is because the lyrics suggest that he is on his way home. Also, the idea of the mise-en-scene being made out of torn pictures and the white boarder around it all gives everything a sort of jerky effect; from this we came up with the idea that stop motion would be quite a pleasant effect that could go well with the lyrics of the song.

Music Video Research - Edits

This version of 'Misery' by Maroon 5 is not the video we wanted, however the original does not seem to be on youtube. The original video consists of post-production graphic edits which we have thought about including into our video also. This music video is a story of love, the protagonist male is trying to get the leading laday. We feel that this video relates in many aspects to our own story within our music video.
From watching this video, you can see that the edits make the video more exciting and interesting. Therefore, grabbing the audience throughout the song.
We are hoping to create the same effect using this technique.

Our Audience Questionnaire

This is what our audience questionnaire looked like:

Audience Research-Questionnaire Part 1.

Here are the results from our Audience Questionnaire!

We questionned more males than females as from our initial audience research we found that more males listen to House music.

We used a variety of age groups to find our target audience. We have decided that our target age group is 17-19 year olds.

The favourite genres of music which came out of our questionnaire were hip hop, punk and house. Our song has some elements of hip hop through the rapping therefore this audience research is still relevant to our work. Also 60% of the people we questionned do listen to techno/house music.

Audience Reasearch Part 2.

Here are some images depicting what the people we asked expected to see in a techno/house music video:

We hope to both follow and challenge these views. We are going to take dynamic shots of iconic London landmarks and have an element of love in our video. We have chosen to not set our video in a club or at a party with lasers and bright lighting as we wanted to our video to follow a narrative; 80% of the people asked agreed with us.

When we asked "In a song centred around love, would you prefer a music video which has a happy ending or a surprise twist? " Only 10% of people asked wanted a happy ending. Therefore to make our video more engaging we have created a surprise ending. We also took into account that music videos are watched and played over and over again, therefore the video must be interesting enough to sustain viewers attention.
60% of the people we asked in our questionnaire said that they would expect to see the artist in our music video.
Therefore after much debating we decided our artist would be the protagonist in our video and we are also planning on featuring our rapper as well.

80% of the people who participated in our questionnaire were in favour of graphics added post-production, this was good news for us as we are very keen on doing this.
Finally the average number of locations that were expected in a music video was 4, we are aiming to use more than 4 locations to make our video even more engaging.

Lyric Analysis

'I'm In Love' is quite an expressive song with quite self-explanatory lyrics. However, here is a brief breakdown of what we feel certain parts express.

These are just a few key obvious points that we feel needed to be expressed in either the filming or post-production of our video.

Artist Research

Juanita researched into Prof. Greens star image and deconstructed it as we feel he is closely linked to our own stars image.

The overall appearance of Prof. Green signifies he doesn’t care about what anyone has to say, this can be perceived as the typical attitude of many British “ ‘ard body ” male teenagers. He dresses in a very modern and casual youthful way – t-shirt, jeans new era hats, tattoos. The image of the green speakers connote that he (Professor Green) is a loud impenetrable force, as is his music.
• The first image gives off the impression that no one can touch or break him, like he’s at the top of the food chain and therefore has become untouchable. Whereas the second picture has him kneeling down on the floor and therefore makes him look vulnerable and small. This can be seen as him showing his softer side.
• His stance with arms out and head slightly tilted back is almost a challenging gesture. Complete with his cocky facial expression, his whole persona provides us with a challenge: “I dare you.”

These ideas can be used in our pop video because we have the main character who is helplessly in love to the point he is singing about it, but instead of singing throughout the whole song there is a part in the song where the singer raps about the specific things that he likes about her “ love the way you talk, love the way you stare” and how its “real love”.
