Radio

The techno/electronic genre of ‘I’m In Love’ means that the song could be played on a vast range of radio stations in 'The Charts'. Due to its none-mainstream status, other than Radio 6, the song is best played on stations such as Capital FM and Kiss100. This is because the have a range of shows played on the stations with the different presenters, who specialise in different types of music that is based on the genre that the station itself plays.

Getting Started

We started to brainstorm out ideas, and discuss the types of shots and camera techniques we would like to use. We have made a lot of progress in coming up with the narrative for our video in particular, we just need to get it down onto a storyboard.

Also, we practised some stop motion camera work, and also some other shots, this was quite successful as it will save us time when we are actually filming on location! We just need to edit this footage to see if it gives us the end result that we want!

Storyboards + Synopsis

Our music video will take form as a journey of a male's standard day as he goes out, excited to go home again to see his girlfriend. However, we decided against an average love story as we wanted to make our plot more exciting. We did this by twisting the ending to include the other protagonist: the Rapper, and how he is potentially the girls other lover, and the audience is left with a cliff-hanger. Here is our synopsis in brief:

-Guy wakes up in bed with his girlfriend
-He gets up and starts getting ready to go out
-Kisses girlfriend goodbye and leaves home
-Walks down a long road oblivious to other girls looking at him
-Walks to a station and gets on a train
-Comes off train and picks up newspaper
-Walks down long road towards a park
-Finds bench and sits, whilst the so far anonymous rapper leaves
-Guy opens newspaper [transition to rapper]
-Rapper walking down a road and past coffee shop
-Guy sitting in coffee shop [match on action transition on heart shapes]
-Guy comes out jewellery shop with a ring, outs in pocket and walks
-Split screen between guy and rapper both walking simultaneously down a road home
-Time lapse: rapper in house with girl but not yet known to audience
-Guy comes home and see's them
-Rapper turns to wink and ending is left hanging

Stop Motion Practise

We have been practising possible effects that we would like to include in our video. The video above is of a stop motion practise that we carried out. We really like this effect and will fit this in to our project.

Location Research - London

Alex and Juanita spent a Sunday up in London taking pictures of our ideal locations for the upcoming music video.

Locations included:

  • Southbank
  • Millenium Bridge
  • Camden Market
  • Millenium Eye - Bridge
At each of these locations both Alex and Juantia tried to invisualise the aspects of the shots we would be taking there to see whether they were possible and how it would work. They worked out possible routes we could take during our filming process and what kind of shots and angles would be available to us in these locations. We will then use this information for when we plan our story boards.

Video Effect Practise :D

Alex and Juanita also made a clip in london. It was suppose to be a shot of the artist standing still with a crowd whizzing past him in ultra speed. It didnt quite work to plan.

More Video Practise

The group has recently been practising effects that we may use in the final video to prepare ourselves for the filming.

We have created a shot where we zoom into a newpaper with the front page picture being of our artist and it closes up to the shot and we go into the picture where the clip begins to play of the artist singing. We have found it a little hard to make it perfect but we still gave it a try. We may use this idea in our video but ulter it slightly.
There has been problems uploading this clip but should be here soon.

Planning!!

Today, we finally managed to select filming dates for our project.
As Amy and Emily work either Saturday or Sunday, and then everyone has a different Sixth Form timetable, we have found it tricky to find free available dates.
However, as we have halfterm coming up we felt this would be a good time to film our video and that our cast members will most likely find it easier to make free time during this week.
We got together and worked out which days we would have free and came up with Thursday 28th and Friday 29th of October.

Juanita booked out two HD Sony cameras, tripods and one monopod for the whole of half term.
Below is some photo evidence of her hard work!!

HOWEVER, we are still yet to finish story boarding and finalising locations as well as completing our cast crew.
We have managed to get one member so far:
Pete Blyth = 'Main Man'.
But we still need to cast the 'main lady' and 'rapper' characters for our video

Just Don't Do It

DON'T LEAVE WITHOUT THE CAMERA CHARGER

We had so many issues with regards to booking and actually taking out the cameras that when we had to negotiate with other groups who didn't have cameras we became very reliable on them to give us the equipment we initially needed. The negotiation meant that we only got to pick up one camera and one tripod instead of both sets, and another group would get the other and bring it to us on the decided day... They never checked for a camera charger. Instead of picking up the other Sony camera, the other group got a Cannon one that didn't have a charger; which meant it couldn't be charged.
RULE ONE!

Filming Days in Motion

Emily has been trying to plan out a schedule for our filming days.
We hope to film all of the shots in and around London on the 28th of October and then to do shots in Amys house and takes from the station to amys ect on the 29th and any others that we may need.
We (Emily, Amy, Alex, Juanita, Vikki, Pete, Rapper - Yet to be named) shall all meet at Amys on 38th at 9.30 - ready with cameras, props, tapes and lightening if need (fingers crossed this will all go according to plan :D)
We have now casted Vikki Bradely as our leading lady. Lets hope she will be 100% commited!!
Still, we are looking for a rapper but struggling, with little time left to cast.

Filming Day 1: London babyyyyy :)

Here are a few pictures from our first day of filming.

Filming Day 1: London
View more presentations from Emily.

We spent about 6 hours, from 9.30 - 4.30, carrying out 1/3 of our music video filming. We got about 20 mins worth of footage for all the shots in London that we will hopefully need.
We still have the rest of our video to shot which will take place Wednesday, unless we need any re shoots.
The day was very successful and well planned, we used our storyboards and what we had learnt from our trip to London researching locations to be as efficient as possible. We took turns when filming so the work was very evenly distributed. Peter, our actor was very enthusiastic and played his role very well. We want to carry on this level of teamwork and enthusiasm for our next day of filming.

Tuesday 7 December 2010

Filming

We were filming the opening of our video, we had to film after school at around 4pm; this meant that we had to film before it was dark. This proved to be very difficult, and we didn't manage to film everything that we had originally intended. We were happy with the footage we managed to get though, and it was our first sessions filming with Peter and Vikki, as always however, we were very pleased with the effort that they put into their acting.
One shot in particular that we tried was a birds eye view of Peter's face lying in bad looking directly up at the camera. This proved to be quite challenging as Alex's shadow of her filming was in the shot. Therefore we moved Peter so that he was sitting up against a wall and then we put a pillow behind his head to give the illusion that he was lying down.
Overall this was successful, and we managed to secure footage which we are very happy with. We also arranged our next dates for filming.

Snow Days = Extensionssssss

Due to the never ending snow from Tuesday 2nd, school ended half an hour earlier on the Wednesday and then was closed due to sever weather and icey roads. This meant that we lost VALUABLE lesson time as well as in school. These circumstances we're beyond our control. We have had lots of prbolems surrounding our music video but they could all be resolved... this time there was nothing that could be done to alter nature.
We have come back to school, and have been told that we have a new deadline for our practical: Friday 10th
With the deadline for our blogs and evaluations being:
Friday 17th.
Two extremely crucial dates for the diary.

STESSEDDDD!!!

Well to our surprise, we had lots and lots of snowww :D

This meant no editing for us :(

So now that the snow has gone, Emily has gone into Coombe to edit some more.

We're hoping we can get it finished by Wednesday even though we had a few days off school :D

DigiPak Update:

Sooo, Like we said, yesterday we took lots and lots of photos of Peter! Emily, Alex and Amy all took turns in snappping away. We think Peter loved it, because he couldn't stop posing :P
Hopefully, today we will be able to upload all the pictures, select a few of the better ones and then edit out the background and change it and maybe change his clothes or something for some of the pictures to create our awesome and amazing digipak.

These are some digipaks that we have looked at:

As our artist is reasonably new to the music world, images of him on the front cover and throughout the digipak are necessary to promote the artist both musically and as a personality, a celebrity. This digipak (above) as well as the others in fact, have a theme running throughout and are consistent as the images are all from the same photo shoot. We have therefore taken all our photos in similar locations to promote a certain atmosphere surrounding our artist.

We may want to consider using images which reflect a general tone and theme of the music in our album, similarly to the digipak above and its use of hearts.

We will need to select a relevant colour scheme also, we may choose to use more than two colours like the album above, although this gives a very distinctive effect, it may not be suitable for the style of our artist and their music.

This digipak unlike many others, does not use an image of the artist on the front cover, we will most likely not consider this option as we have chosen to have an artist logo.

Filming the Rapper!

We designated this evening of filming to the rapping scenes. We had even more difficulty with lighting on this occasion than before. As we were filming outside, so had no use of electric lighting, we chose a location near a street light. Peter was very professional when filming this scene, and after a short practice we were ready to film. We also decided to film so more footage of Peter singing other parts of the song so that we had more footage to work with and cut away to.
If we had more hours of daylight then we would have tried to film some more shots in the same area but this was not possible. We made sure to film some close ups to ensure that our video contains a range of shot types. We are gradually cutting down the amount of footage we have left to film with only a few more dates planned.

Wednesday 3 November 2010

Filmingg! Take 2.

After spending the day in London filming, we filmed a total of about 20 minutes of footage. We found this to be quite reasonable considering we only filmed roughly a third of our total video. We then had to decide what days everyone was free to film the remaining footage for our song. Wednesday the 3rd of November was the next availble date.

So Today (Wednesday the 3rd of November) Emily, Alex, Peter and Chelsea went to Richmond to filmthe jewellery footage that we needed. Unfortunately, the camer was not charged. However, we did manage to film what we thought was necessary.

Our next filming dates our:
  • Monday 8th
  • Tuesday 9th

Saturday 30 October 2010

Final Scenes

The latest piece of filming was back at our "house" location to film our final scene. On this occasion we needed it to be dark, so that lack of light was less of a problem. The only thing was that Peter's face was hard to distinguish in the dark when he was walking towards the house, we did however improvise by using a large torch. We also had a problem with communicating with two of our actors who were being filmed inside the house but from the outside. Therefore, we stayed on the phone to them to give them the signal and direct the properly. The rain could have been an issue for us, had it got heavier as the window would be covered in water making it impossible to see through. Luckily the rain wasn't too strong, and am umbrella protected the camera!

We found this scene particularly challenging as we had to experiment with lighting and a sheet to create the silhouette effect we were looking for. After this day of filming we are only left with small amount of footage left to be filmed which shouldn't take more than an evening hopefully!

Video Synopsis!

Our artist leaves his home, which he shares with his girlfriend, and goes about his day/journey to buy he an engagement ring. During which he is constantly thinking about her and wanting to be back with her. In the end he returns home and proposes to his girlfriend.

Our video is simplistic in it's plot, but the blend of narrative within the music video filming and editing style, creates an engaging piece of film. We have included our artist rapping, in order to comply with the music video conventions; we decided not to have our artist singing throughout the song as we thought that this did not fit with a narrative-based music video. One video in particular that we researched, and was similar to our style of music video was Just Jack's "The Day I Die".

We are making sure that we edit to the beat and don't make our clips too long to avoid using unnecessary, and uninteresting footage. We are of course aware that our video does need to look like a music video, while also not following all of the conventions. Our video needs to be watchable for multiple times by one person and it needs to be interesting enough to sustain these views.

Typical :(

Unfortunately, we've had to re-do some of our shots:
  • Rapper
  • Ending shots
  • Peter leaving the house
So on Sunday, we re-did our rapper and leaving the house shots, as well as taking pictures for our digipak :D And then tonight we are going to re-do the ending shots :) soo hopefully all we go well!!
Emily was suppose to upload the shots we did yesterday today at school and try edit but she's currently waiting for the computer we're using to be free and then she will get on it!

We need to edit our pictures to create our digipak! And then finish editing an maybe any research we need to be done.
Ohh also need to upload some videos to youtube as well as typing up our audience research :D
All for FRIDAY!!

Filming = DONE

Today was our last day of filming! Although it took us a lot longer than planned to complete all our shots, we hope that by re-filming shots that we weren't completely satisfied with will make our filming even more professional. Amy, Alex and Emily re-filmed our ending to ensure that it makes sense and to improve the quality of lighting. Vikki and Peter were very professional in their acting and are pleased that there is nothing left to film! We are all very pleased to have the filming completed especially as the weather has taken a turn for the worse! We can now concentrate on finishing our editing in iMovie and then begin our Final Cut Pro additional edits, we are confident that it will all come together once these edits are completed. We have some research work to complete then the finishing touches will be added to our websites and Digipak! Just 4 days to go!

Even More Equipment Issues!!

When I went to get the filming equipment today for our production over half term I was told that the monopods had all been lent out, therefore we will either need to try and manage without one or borrow one off of another group. Fingers Crossed the quality of our filming will not be changed by this, and we will all try our best to make the most of the equipment that we are fortunate enough to have! We definitely made the right choice to book our cameras early and need to ensure that the swapping of equipment from group to group runs as smoothly as possible. I also found out today that there is another group which we will need to share our camera with making the schedule for filming even tighter!

Peer Assessment

In our groups we had to go round the class and watch each others videos amd assess them, even if they weren't finished. Our video was was far from finished at the time; we still hadn't filmed a few shots, and had others to re-do, regardless, we were assessed. The feedback was welcome as we were open to changes and alterations that had to be made because we hadn't completed the editing.
Feedback has to be taken with a 'pinch of salt'; we cannot afford to take it to heart because this is the information that will make a good music video a great one. It took a while to get to the stage that we were at when we were assessed
Below is the feedback that we recieved about our music video part way through the editing period:

The results that we received showed a semi-understanding of our video; becuase we had the basics done people were able to understand what we had left to do. However, one of the comments said that our Main Man looked as if he was sad.. This would be fixed using live type and final cut.

Tuesday 19 October 2010

The Cameras + Half Term = PROBLEM!

Luckily both the small Sony HD cameras and tripods have been booked out weeks in advance! Throughout the course of the day people have been rushing around to book out the cameras, however with a total of 6 altogether we knew it was ESSENTIAL to make sure we had the equipment we both wanted and needed before this chaotic rush commenced.

Now, however, we have to come to arrangements with other people who also need them on other days.
Things we need to consider about this agreement are:
- Can we get them back
- ...With plenty of time to charge beforehand
- Because we are the group who are supposed to have them in our possession, we cannot afford for them to break our be lost.
Not only will we be held responsible, but we will also not have filmed our work.

Wednesday 13 October 2010

Feedback

We have started to receive more feedback from other groups with regards to our video. We have told them to watch it and to be as critical as they can; we have still received a much more positive response which we feel is almost too good to be true. Because of this we have asked are EXTREEEEEMELY critical teacher if he too can do an assessment for us.

..... Let's see how this goes.

Tuesday 12 October 2010

Let's Try This Again Shall We..?

Uploading the fast and slow sequnces: take 39...
What a joke?! We are currently in the process trying to upload our fast and slow sequences once again. Although we finished filming uploading and editing our preliminary task, it has proved difficult to upload the footage and we are yet to find out why it is such a challenge. Because of this one set back we have not been able to blog about it and how our influences for our music video has stemmed or been discouraged from it. We hope to have a solution to this repeatedly annoying solved VERY sooooon.
Our deadline is coming and Youtube is being STUBBORN!

Monday 11 October 2010

Peer Assessment: Take 2

As the video is now officially complete, we have suggested to our teachers that we should have another peer assessment. This is because the first time our video was not even close to being roughly edited, and neither was many of the other groups. This time, however, almost everyone is complete. It will be interesting to see what kind of feedback we will receive this time.

Friday 10 September 2010

Digipak :D

Alex has been working very hard on creating our digipak :D
She has edited the pictures and should be uploading them soon, woohoo!!!
And we can then put them onto our myspace too, yayyyy

Livetype HELL!!

Emily is currently trying to use livetype to add on words to the video!! She's almost done she just needs to add outlines to all the fonts and then cut its back into the video :D
BUTT just to add to the problem. another group has managed to use the same mac as us and is taking up all our time so Emily can't get onto the mac to edit the video which is frustrating as today is the deadline!!! So we are stuck, its very unfair :(

Tuesday 7 September 2010

Oh So Close

We absolutely love lovee LOVE it!
After Alex and Emily, Juanita and Amy spent so much time editing our video, it looks so unbelievably awesome we watched it over and over again and kept finding more things that we liked about it. But we have now been told that some of our clips are too long. Now have to go through the song again, in stages, and edit the clips in much smaller chunks whilst repeatedly playing it back over to make sure everything looks perfecto.
However, thinking about it, this will prove difficult. We like the song as it is but now we can see some minor flaws that weren't really noticeable when we viewed it the first few times. Although it's always good to get a second opinion, it feels like we have had our little bubble popped, even though the changes we make now will produce a better outcome in the long-run.

Sunday 5 September 2010

Final Cut Will Have To Wait.

Due to unexpected re-editing we have to delay the process of completing the process on final cut as many shots are still needing to be altered and made smaller. This is much easier to do using iMovie HD.
THEN we can move on to the finale in Final Cut. Here we can edit the minute things, add the animations of the hearts that we had originally planned to emphasise the 'Love', process the video and finally save it as our final piece.

Wednesday 1 September 2010

AWESOMEEE!!

YESSS!!! Emily has finished editing woohoo :D We are all sooo sooo sooo happpy!!
